Most medical cannabis patients are familiar with THC and CBD the two most common chemical compounds you can find in a cannabis plant. THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is marijuana's main psychoactive element that gives you the feeling of euphoria. CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive chemical that is believed to be responsible for the majority of cannabis' miraculous medicinal effects: from reducing pain to easing nausea to stopping severe seizures. But there are a lot more to cannabis: we will tell you about five cannabinoids that are less famous but still extremely beneficial to our health.

CBC is a non-psychoactive cannabis compound, which means it won't get you high. This cannabinoid may be helpful in reducing the severances of pain and inflammation. CBC may also help slow down the growth of cancer cells.

It looks like CBC really loves sunlight and hot weather because it is easier to find this cannabinoid in cannabis strains that were grown in warmer climes. The average content of CBC in marijuana strains grown in colder regions is less than 1 percent.

CBG is also a non-psychoactive chemical compound, plus, it is one of the cannabinoids that can be easily found in hemp. Most cannabis strains, however, contain less that 1 percent of cannabigerol.

The main medicinal benefit of CBG is its ability to inhibit the growth of cancerous and tumorous cells. CBG is also believed to be helpful in reducing pain and inflammation.

It is pretty difficult to find even the smallest amounts of CBN in live cannabis plants. This chemical compound shows itself when the levels of THC begin to decrease; mostly in harvested cannabis when it is exposed to air and light.

CBN is considered to be mildly psychoactive and is usually used in combination with CBD. Together, these two compounds work best for combating insomnia, reducing muscle spasms and pain.

The chemical structure of THCV, also known as THV, is quite similar to the one of THC. Just like THC, THCV is psychoactive but has a bit different effects: while it still makes you feel high, your head and thoughts remain clear.

As for the medicinal benefits of THCV, the chemical is believed to be able to:

    Reduce the severances of seizures;
    Suppress appetite;
    Normalize blood sugar levels.

CBDV is a homolog of CBD that is most frequently found in wild cannabis strains from Nepal and India. Domesticated marijuana plants contain only trace amounts of the chemical.

Just like CBD, CBDV does not have any psychoactive effects and therefore cannot get you high. What it can do is reduce the quantity and severances of seizures in patients with epilepsy.

These five cannabinoids are not the only chemicals contained in cannabis plants. There are plenty of others, and their medicinal potential is yet to be explored.

It might sound a bit new age, bearing in mind that people are still getting their heads around using CBD as a mainstream anxiety reliever for humans, but Love Hemp aren’t alone in believing that CBD can benefit animals.

Dr. Robert Silver, vet and author of the book ‘Medical Marijuana and Your Pet’, claims that the extract can help reduce pets’ anxiety around stressful occasions like Bonfire Night, as well as treating a variety of conditions like epilepsy.

‘In my experience, for those dogs with uncomplicated epilepsy, the hemp extract will often work better than pharmaceuticals,’ he says.

‘I also have several oncologists in a study group with the extract and they have found that CBD can help to stop the seizures and twitches that can come with brain tumors.’

The product was developed, Love Hemp say after they were inundated with requests from owners looking for cheaper, natural alternative to traditional veterinary treatments.

‘There are plenty of documented cases in the US where CBD has been more effective than the strong drugs that are typically prescribed,’ Dr. Silver goes on to say.

‘Pain relief is a huge area and for those pets with arthritis, hip dysplasia or sore joints, we are finding that the use of hemp relieves their pain and gets them mobile again.’

He also says that canine anxiety is one of the main areas where CBD could have an impact.

‘A CBD supplement can curb these emotions in your dog and protect the animal against unnecessary stress.’

The Love Hemp oil can be bought either in the form of liquid drops or as atomizer sprays which can be consumed straight or mixed with food and drink.

It’s recommended that four drops are used per 1kg of body weight, two to three times a day.

And as you might imagine, it’s providing pretty popular with the dog-owning community.

Fighting For Cannabis-Based Medicine

AVA BARRY HAS Dravet syndrome, an extremely rare, drug-resistant form of epilepsy

The six-year-old suffers from several seizures every day, many of them violent. Several types of pharmaceutical medication have failed to improve her condition and she frequently has to spend time in hospital.

Her parents Vera Twomey and Paul Barry believe there is one thing that can help her: cannabidiol (CBD) oil, a form of medicinal marijuana.

Earlier this year, doctors told them they have run out of pharmaceutical options, but could try some of the failed medicines again in different formats.

In response, they set up an online petition calling for CBD oil to be legalised in Ireland. It is available in some countries and certain states in the US.

The petition, which had over 11,600 signatures at the time of publication, will be sent to Health Minister Simon Harris. A previous version was intended for his predecessor Leo Varadkar.

Dravet syndrome is extremely rare, affecting about one in 20,000 births, and causes regular and prolonged seizures.

When Ava was diagnosed her parents were told she would not walk or talk, but she has defied the odds in this regard and now attends school. However, her condition means she regularly misses days.

“At the moment, if we got Ava to go to school two days a week you’d be concerned she’d not be able to do three, we’re thrilled if she does three. Last year she got to school five days a week just twice.

“I can’t tell you, how badly she wants to go to school, how annoyed she is at me when she can’t go,”
It’s not uncommon for Ava to have up to 12 tonic-clonic seizures a day, where she falls to the floor and shakes violently.

Vera says she also often gets 100 or more ‘absences’ a day and myoclonic jerks, like the jerks people sometimes get before falling asleep.

“They’ve never gone away. We’re still struggling, she’s still having seizures. She’s still going through an awful lot. I’m still very, very worried about her that she might not come out of one of the seizures.

Vera is in contact with a number of parents in other countries whose children have a much better quality of life since they got access to CBD oil.

She says she is aware of one girl from the US whose seizures have reduced from about 300 a month to just three.
